Product Design
With 14+ years of experience designing software products, most of them from scratch, I have a few tricks up my sleeve.
In the future I’d like to apply my product design experience to interactive museum exhibits. My unique ability in product design has it’s roots in fail faster techniques and experience limiting scope to the precise needs of the prototype. But also my ability to explore and find a path in the absence of any direction whatsoever.
Products on page: Build Rite, Uppora, MyHero, Open Fixers, Front Door Fashion, ParxIt, Propelio, Plant Wyffels App, Breach Plan Connect, Hidden Gem, and KinCentral.
BuildRite sought funding and needed a Hololens proof of concept to view and review 3D architectural plans in the real environment in real-time. My task was to create the UX/UI, assets, shaders, and example experience in Unity for the development team to plug into the backend tech.
A former senior IBM security programmer asked me if I’d like to join him in creating a site monitoring service as a hobby. I agreed and created the brand, website design, user experience design, and HTML/CSS for the front and backend.
My client (Jackal) was brought in to revamp the MyHero charity platform MVP, which had been stagnating in development for nearly two years. I led the user research interview process to inform an essential feature set, which allowed us to deliver an MVP in less than two months. I spearheaded the wireframes and worked with another designer on the UI.
I led the design process of an MVP to help real estate investors locate “fixer-uppers.” Part of the the job was to coach my client on how to limit the feature set to the essentials in order to deliver an MVP on-time and on-budget.
I spearheaded the redesign of Front Door Fashion’s platform for stylists to build outfits for customers. I interviewed stylists to create wireframes and used the Vuexy design system template to customize their internal platform, all while mentoring a junior UX designer.
This was one of the most insane deadlines I ever worked with. I created an entire new brand (had some help) and app UX/UI (alone) in two weeks. ParxIt was an MVP to test the concept of “AirBnB of parking.” I’m most proud of the visual metaphor of parking garage wayfinding as the design of the “floors” of the app. The fully functional MVP was launched in 6 weeks from project start.
Property comparison is vital for understanding property value. Propelio proposed a new feature with a pre-built comparison process using a house database. I collaborated with them to create a UI, ensuring each section was positioned relative to the others. Property details were placed in a right-hand drawer, with selected properties calculated below the database.
This was a fun one. Wyffels Hybrids wanted a plant-your-own-corn app for conventions and App Store. My favorite part was the intense Photoshopping and the fact that Wyffels never found out I photographed farm equipment toys in a suburban backyard (shh don’t tell them).
I was tasked with delivering UX/UI to new platform offerings for the eRiskHub brand, a hacker insurance service. These platforms are meant to help people find information on cyber security, potentially during time-sensitive events, so my job was to make sure it’s easy to find and easy to read.
Hidden Gem was a platform akin to Spotify for songwriters with back-catalogs tied up in recording industry contracts. Songwriters could upload music and set up royalties, while users could stream exclusive music via the app.
Positioning itself as the family-focused competitor to Facebook, KinCentral was a regular client for three years. I even represented them at an accelerator in Brazil for three months. In the beginning, the CEO, Damon Danielson used my mockups to raise funding for the project.
